THE VILLAGES OF MASSAROSA
The lake of Massaciuccoli The lake of Massaciuccoli
The villages of Massarosa are renowned for their beautiful views of the Tyrrhenian Sea and of Lake Massaciuccoli. They are made up of medieval buildings, ancient churches and Lucca style villas. The northern most villages are Corsano, with it’s beautiful views of the sea and the church of San Michele; Mommio, a typically medieval village; and Bargecchia, with it’s Romanesque church dedicated to San Martino, whose bells are said to have inspired Puccini. In the area surrounding Massarosa are Pieve a Elici, with it’s majestic church dedicated to San Pantaleone, and Stiava, home to the church of Santa Maria Assunta. Further south, towards Lucca, are the villages of Bozzano, boasting the church of San Prospero and Villa Conti; Compignano, a hillside village immersed in woods and forest and home to Paolina Bonaparte’s villa Baldini, as well at the Romanesque church of San Frediano; and Quiesa, with the church of Santo Stefano and Villas Meneghetti and Spinola.
The village of Massacciuccoli is built around the shores of the lake of the same name. The village is of roman origin, and it is still possible to make out the ruins of the thermal baths and villa that date back to Trojan times. Finally, out towards the Apennines lies the village of Valpromaro, which straddles both Camaiore and Massarosa territory and was once a stop off point on the Via Francigena.
