The municipality evolved around a 16th landing wharf, which was built to aid the transport of the marble extracted from the Apuane Alps. In 1788, Leopoldo I had a fort to erected in the centre of Piazza Garibaldi to protect the wharf and its precious cargo. Over the years, the fort has become a world famous tourist attraction, thanks to the ongoing development of it’s various villas and gardens.
