THE CASTLES OF PIETRASANTA
The Rocca di Sala The Rocca di Sala
Rising above the town of Pietrasanta is the Rocca di Sala, an ancient Ghibelline fort that dominates the historic centre from its position atop a hill behind the city. Its square design features angular towers and a keep in the centre. The fort dates back to the Lombard era, but was restructured by the Lucchese Castruccio Castracano in the 14th century. In the 15th century, it was extended by Paolo Guinigi, who added a small residential palace. The fort was disarmed in the 18th century, under the orders of Leopoldo I.
Meanwhile, the Rocchetta Arrighina resides in pride of place within the confines of the city, next to the Gate of Pisa, the only one remaining of the three medieval gates built by Castruccio Castracani in the 14th century, which he dedicated to his son Arrigo. In the 15th century, it was rebuilt by Francione and La Cecca.
Next to Lake Porta at Beltrame, which formerly marked the northern border of the Captaincy of Pietrasanta, resides the Salto della Cervia Tower. It was erected by Grand Duke Ferdinando I of Medici in the 16th century, but has been long since abandoned.
